The
opah's mouth is toothless and can be extended forward. The
scales are small and very loose. Its length is 1,5-1,8 metres,
and the weight can reach 100 kilogrammes. Its habitat is at
depths of 100-400 metres, and it feeds mainly of squid.
In Icelandic waters it is caught during summer and autumn, when it
follows the squid up north. Restaurants bid high prices for this
delicious food.
The opah lives in all tempered oceans, i.e. the North Atlantic from
Norway and Iceland to the Mediterranian. It is also found in the
South Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. |
